In November 2008, the FDA warned that certain Asian ethnic groups carry a certain gene which cause an increased risk of Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Scientific data has shown that Asians have a gene called the HLA-V*1502 allele, which unfortunately can cause an increased risk of Stevens Johnson Syndrome from Dilantin. It is therefore extremely important to have a blood or genetic test to identify whether the gene, which is a human leukocyte antigen allele, HLA-V*1502, is present in the body. This gene occurs in individuals of Asian ancestry, including people from China, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia.  This gene test should be done before the individual is given Dilantin
